Interfaith Walk for Climate Justice

A WAMC listener wrote me about a recent commentary:

Dear Professor,

I couldn’t agree with you more about the dereliction of our nation’s spiritual and religious leaders in the face of the climate crisis.  For this very reason, a small interfaith group in the Upper Hudson Valley has joined with the global climate action group GreenFaith to organize a walk and ritual on the Rip Van Winkle Bridge on Sunday October 17th.  This action is a prelude to the upcoming UN climate conference in Glasgow.  Information is attached.

I hope you continue to call out faith leaders on this issue.  Thank you for your essential work.

Peace,

Faiths 4 Climate Justice – Oct 17th

Invitation to join walk across the Hudson River

I’m going on an Interfaith Walk across the Rip Van Winkle Bridge for Climate Justice.

Would you like to come along?  Oh, and bring a small drum or a tambourine or a small bell to ring… and a sign or small banner from your faith group or environmental organization.

Please RSVP (below) so we can estimate the possible size of the gathering.

Send this invitation on to others… or write your own with a link to the RSVP (below).

Here are some of the details:
Walk Across the Mahicantuck (Hudson River)

on the Rip Van Winkle Bridge between Catskill and Hudson
Sunday, 17 October 2021 from 3:30 PM to 5:00 PM

At 3:00, begin with parking on either the Hudson (east) end or the Catskill (west) end of the bridge.  Please consider car-pooling as parking at the bridge is limited.  There is more parking on the Catskill side than on the Hudson side.

Assemble at 3:30: two groups will assemble – one on each end of the bridge – for a brief statement of purpose.

Walk at 3:50: both groups will begin walking toward the center of the Rip Van Winkle Bridge.

Reflection at 4:15: when both groups connect at the middle, we will stop for a short ritual followed by the sound of drums, tambourines, and bells.

Walk at 4:25: both groups will return to their beginning points.

Assemble 4:50: both groups will assemble – one on each end of the bridge – for a brief benediction.
